Dorothy Emma Freeman Mayo, died Monday, January 8, 2024, at Fleur Heights Nursing Home, in Des Moines, Iowa.
A celebration of life will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 15, 2024, at Merle Hay Funeral Home.
Dorothy was born on March 18, 1924. She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Mayo, son Michael J. Kelly, 3 brothers, and 5 sisters. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Lilane Tantengco, granddaughter Michaelle Gallagher, four great-granddaughters, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. She worked for many years as a telephone switchboard operator, a typist for an accounting firm, and as a stay-at-home mother.
Her family was very important to her. She enjoyed entertaining and cooking large meals during the holidays. Her baked beans were legendary. Dorothy was a Chicago Cubs fan. She loved watching her boys play on TV and was delighted to see them play at Wrigley Field.
Dorothy enjoyed good food, music, and dancing. She taught many people how to waltz in her living room. In her free time, she liked sewing and crocheting and made several keepsake blankets for loved ones. In her later years, Dorothy made handmade cards to keep in touch with loved ones. She was known for being punctual with her anniversary, birthday, and holiday cards.
