Gene Tasler

Gene Tasler, 90, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2023, at the Bickford Senior Living in Urbandale. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 24th at 11 am. Visitation will be from 10 am until service time at the Merle Hay Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Rd Des Moines. The burial will be at the Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery.


Gene was born on Sunday, May 14, 1933, to Richard & Cleo (Crib) Tasler in Yale, Iowa. Gene was raised in and graduated from Johnston, Iowa. As a boy caddied at the Hyperion Field Club in Johnston. Gene served his country during the Korean Conflict with the US Air Force, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his discharge, he met and married his wife of 65 years, Dellamae Dennison. Gene & Dellamae were married January 5, 1958, moving to Urbandale shortly after. Together they had 4 children, David, Tonja, Michael and John.


Gene was a member of the Carpenter’s Local #106 for 71 years and was extremely proud of that fact. During his life he greatly enjoyed coaching youth softball and baseball. He was an active coach with the Urbandale, Beaverdale & Raccoon Valley youth leagues. He was always a coach at heart, and extended that gift to his golf buddies, always having a good swing tip. Gene always had family first and being around family was his greatest love.


Gene is survived by 4 children, David (Mary Wellman) Tasler, Tonja (James Lynch) Parish, Michael (Stefanie) Tasler and John (Tam) Tasler. Seven grandchildren, Jamie (Rob) Oxenford, Holly (Derek) Parish, Luke Tasler, Millie Tasler, Garison Tasler, Graceann Tasler and Gibson Tasler. One brother, Richard (DeeAnn) Tasler, four sisters, Lila Tenney, Katy (Gene) Loomis, Linda (Dave) Holmes and Paula Larkin. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.


Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Della, parents, his brothers, Nyal & Roger and a sister-in-law, Judy Tasler and brother-in-law, Bob Larkin. In Lieu of flowers the family suggests giving to “Many Hands for Haiti” P.O. Box 204 Pella, Iowa 50219. An organization Gene was passionate about, making several mission trips to the region.
