Helen Fanning

Helen Lucille Fanning, 104, passed away on March 15, 2023, at Valley View Health Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Helen was born on December 18, 1918, to John and Antorena (Ryen) Brown in Slater, Iowa. As a young woman, she taught country school in the Story County area and then worked in a physician’s office. She attended nursing school at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, and became a Registered Nurse in 1943. She married the love of her life, Vernon Fanning, on November 26, 1947. For many years, they were active members of Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Together they enjoyed many years of sharing dinners, dancing, and traveling. She truly enjoyed spending time with her family and receiving updates about their activities over the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Vernon, brothers John and Truman, and her sisters Edith, Thelma, Mildred and baby Thelma. Her memory will continue to be cherished by her many nieces and nephews and their families. A special “thank you” is extended to the staff of Hospice of the Midwest and of Valley View Health Center for the excellent care and love they gave Helen.

A graveside service will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery, located at 4400 Merle Hay Rd. Des Moines, IA 50310, on April 8 at 11:00 AM.
