James Gary Althaus “Jim”, 66 of Altoona, a father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on May 23, 2022 from chronic kidney disease.
He was a beloved father to his three children. His children fondly remember his help with homemade Halloween costumes, school projects, and their visits to places like the beach, and Winterset “castle”, and spending time at the lakehouse that he helped build with his parents and siblings. He was a great cook, “grillmaster”, and loved a good prank. We will miss his laughs.
Jim is survived by his sister, Helen Drake of Ames; daughter, Jeanette Santana, son-in-law Gerad Santana and granddaughters Shea and Aubree Santana of California; daughter, Amanda Althaus of Altoona; and son, Matt Althaus of Ankeny.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Joyce Althaus; as well as his brothers Douglas and Bob.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 26 at Merle Hay Funeral Home. There will be a service to remember Jim at 7:30 p.m.
