James Lyle Pruitt

February 28, 1934 – March 15, 2025


James Lyle Pruitt, 91, of Johnston, Iowa, passed away peacefully at Brio of Johnston on March 15, 2025. Born on February 28, 1934, in Des Moines to Marion and Erma Pruitt, James led a life of dedication, service, and passion.


James began his career as a flight engineer in the United States Air Force, stationed in Germany, where he served with distinction. Upon returning home, he became a firefighter with the Des Moines Fire Department, dedicating 32 years to the safety of his community. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant during his tenure, earning the respect of his peers and colleagues.


During the course of his career as a fire fighter he acquired a part time job with Iowa Fire Equipment Company in 1974. By the late 1970’s James had purchased 30% of the firm and helped develop it throughout the 1980’s, he purchased the balance of the firm in the late 1980’s, while continuing to be a fulltime fire fighter. His business thrived, Growing, and expanding the firm throughout Iowa, and the Midwest, until his retirement in 1999.

As an avid golfer, James found joy on the course and spent many winters golfing in the warm climates of Suprise, Arizona, Naples Florida, and Palm Desert, California, where he achieved a back-to-back hole in one, an incredible achievement.


Known for his energy and vitality, James even hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back, a testament to his adventurous spirit.


James was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and two brothers. He is survived by his beloved wife, LaVonne, sons Brett (Michelle) and Brian, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. James will be remembered for his love of family, his zest for life, and his unwavering commitment to his community.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in James’ honor to Wesley Life Hospice of Johnston or a charity of your choice.


A committal service will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery on Friday, March 28th at 12:30 PM.  There will be a luncheon held after the committal service at 1:30 PM at the American Legion Post 403 in Van Meter, IA.  All are welcome to join in sharing memories of James and enjoying a nice meal.
