Judith Rae DeFord

Updated: Feb 10

Judith Rae DeFord, aged 81, passed away February 5, 2025, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Judy was born in Des Moines, Iowa on July 23, 1943, to Melvin “Bud” and Kathryn (Craddock) Anderson.

Judy attended North High School and then went on to The Americana School of Beauty in Des Moines. Judy enjoyed many years working alongside her eldest daughter, Debbie in the salon.

Judy's compassionate spirit extended beyond her career. As a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous for many years, she became a mentor to countless women in recovery, offering her wisdom, guidance, and support. Her open heart and willingness to help others became a cornerstone of who she was. Whether through her kindness, her listening ear, or her generosity.

Her love for family and friends was evident in the simple joys she cherished—spending time with loved ones, listening to live music, and hosting card games filled with laughter. Her home was always a place of warmth, where all were welcome, and it was especially memorable when she would spend evenings playing Skip Bo with her siblings and mother.

Judy's bond with her first husband, Charles A. Brownell, remained strong even after their divorce, a testament to the love and respect they shared. After the passing of her father, Judy lovingly became a companion to her mother, traveling and living alongside her in her later years.

Judy is survived by her children, Debra Brownell, Charles (Kristen) Brownell and Andrea Brownell (Ryan Schuler); brother, Robert Davis; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Judy is preceded in death by parents, Melvin “Bud” and Kathryn Anderson, sister, JoAnn Barmore; former husband, Russel DeFord.

The celebration of life will be held Thursday, February 13, 2025, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., with a remembrance service starting at 6:30 p.m., at Merle Hay Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines, Iowa.

Memorial contributions may be made to family in loving memory of Judy.
