Lois ‘Janice’ Mart, 90, passed away peacefully at The Copper Shores in Pleasant Hill, Iowa on August 29, 2023, after a brief illness.
Janice was born January 15, 1933, in Beebeetown, Iowa to Chester and Myrtle Thomas. She graduated from Beebeetown High School in 1950. Janice went on to earn her nursing degree from Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1953. She then worked two years at Murphy Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa.
Janice married Bob Mart on January 3, 1955, and moved to Des Moines. In 1959 they moved to Altoona, Iowa where they were together for 49 years before Bob’s death in 2004. To this union they had two children, Michael and Jane. Janice worked at Mercy Hospital, Iowa Methodist Medical Center, including the Blank Children’s Hospital, and Iowa Lutheran Hospital where she retired from nursing in 1998. She enjoyed keeping busy by crocheting, painting ceramics, reading, sewing, baking, gardening, helping others in her community and volunteering at the Altoona Food Bank.
Janice is survived by her children: Mike (Rae Ann) Mart of Altoona and Jane (Tom) Tingle of Colorado, grandchildren Jason, Jerry, Dee and Jake, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob, grandson Adrian Mart, her parents, five sisters and one brother.
No services are planned. Cremation and inurnment will take place at Merle Hay Mausoleum, Des Moines, Iowa.
