Phong Thanh Nguyen was born on November 18, 1947, at Saigon, Vietnam, and passed away on September 23rd, 2024, at the Traditions Memory Care of Newton. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 1st from 9 to 11 am, at the Merle Hay Chapel, 4400 Merle Hay Rd. Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2pm Tuesday Oct. 1st at the Church of St. Peter, 618 E 18th St. in Des Moines.
Mr. Phong was a hardworking man throughout his early years and shortly after got drafted to the Vietnam war. After the war, Phong and his family were fortunate enough to have an opportunity to travel across the world to America and start a new life seeking freedom and success in 1991. Mr. Phong was a very religious man that had a passion for arts and music. Phong’s catholic paintings was well known throughout all the churches in his area. Phong was also into music and was playing the guitar in his free time.
Phong was married in 1973 to his wife Nga Bui. Together they had four kids, Dong, Xuan, Kiem, and Hung. He was a very responsible man that took care of everybody around him.
