Richard B. "Dick" DenOtter

Richard B. “Dick” DenOtter, age 85, of Pleasant Hill, IA, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday evening, February 2, 2025. Dick was born on March 2, 1939, in Des Moines, IA, but grew up and attended school in Altoona, IA.

On January 26, 1968, Dick married Susan Toye, whom he affectionately called “Trixie.” Over the course of their 57-year marriage, they built not only a beautiful home together but also a strong and loving family, dedicating themselves to raising their three children and later embracing the joy of seven grandchildren.

A gifted carpenter, Dick spent decades working for Elview Construction and Neumann Millwork, where his skill, dedication, and work ethic were deeply admired. He rarely missed a day on the job, and his ability to build and repair anything made him a trusted and respected craftsman.

Family was the heart of Dick’s world. He cherished gatherings and treasured time spent with his loved ones. He took immense pride in his children and their achievements, never missing a single milestone—whether it was a swim meet, a wrestling match, a motorcycle race, an awards ceremony, or a graduation, he was always there, cheering them on. His love extended to his grandchildren, whom he delighted in watching grow and excel in sports, dance, and various talents.

Beyond his devotion to family and work, Dick had a passion for motorcycles. Some of his greatest memories were made taking motorcycle trips with close friends, his son, and his grandson. He also found joy in his winter getaways to Donna, TX, working in his garage, tinkering with cars, listening to music, and enjoying his daily lunch outings. One thing was certain—Dick never missed a meal and truly appreciated food.

Dick is survived by his wife, Susan, of Pleasant Hill, IA; daughters Mindy (Joe) Ciprian and Tami (Wes) Smeal; son Tug (Jamie) DenOtter; and his cherished grandchildren, Mati, Drew, Kayla, Jett, Cannon, Trey, and Serena. He also leaves behind his niece, Laura (Will) Hildreth, and nephew, Jordan Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Gloria Robinson, and his niece Linda Shedd.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Rd, Des Moines, IA 50310.

Memorial donations may be made in Dick’s honor to UnityPoint Hospice – Des Moines, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.

Dick’s legacy of love, strength, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be cherished.
