Sharon Dianne Bates (61) of Maumee, OH passed away Sunday, May 21. Sharon was born on September 3, 1961, to Willard Harold and Ruby (Sparks) Detty in Minot, ND. She loved her tribe hard, and fiercely. We have all been blessed one way or another to have had her in our lives. If you were my friend, you were one of her children instantly.
She lived most of her life in Des Moines, IA where she managed The Red Wing Shoe Store for over 25 years. In retirement she moved to Maumee, OH to spend more time with her beloved daughter and cherished grandchildren. In addition to her work and family, Sharon pursued a number of passions including fishing, often with her partner and daughter in tow. She also enjoyed gardening, playing her guitar, art, and caring for her dogs Princess and Kiddo. Her love language was cooking up a storm, and I do mean a storm, because she could tornado a kitchen with the best of them. She had the insane ability of taking a meal and making it a masterpiece. Also the talent of forgetting at least 5 things she needed at the grocery store, so she sent you back for them 3 or 4 times, her daughter Dannie has inherited that talent as well.
She is survived by her daughter, Dannie (Dave) Luce of Bowling Green, OH; her life-partner,
Jeanne Failor, her sisters, Pamela (Michael) Calvin of Fredericksburg, VA, Michelle (Leland Swanson) Detty of Traverse City, MI; her grandchildren, Mickyle, Lillie, and Cadence Luce, as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family.
She is preceded in death by parents Willard Harold and Ruby and brother Gregory Detty
Memorial contributions can be made to The Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
There will be a memorial gathering on Saturday, June 24th at Merle Hay Chapel (4400 Merle Hay Rd., Des Moines, IA) from 3:00pm to 5:00pm to commemorate Sharon’s life.
