Shirley (Askern) Denny went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, September 22, 2023. She was at peace and surrounded by her beloved family as she would have wanted.
Shirley was born in New Virginia, Iowa on December 23, 1938. She attended New Virginia High School where she was a cheerleader. In her senior yearbook, she named Dave Denny as her hobby. She and her beloved Dave went on to be married for 66 years.
Shirley loved to travel and camp. She and Dave traveled to Alaska seven times. She loved to play the card game Rook, cook amazing dinners for her large family, and spend every minute she could with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents William and Eva Askern, brother William and sister Twyla. She is survived by her husband Dave, sons Marvin (Janet), Mike (Marna), Marty (Judy), and daughter Shellie (Tom) as well as 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Shirley will be greatly missed by all, but we celebrate the time that we were blessed to spend with this amazing woman.
Visitation will be held between 5 to 8 pm on Friday, September 29, 2023. The funeral service will be held Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 1:00 pm. Both will take place at the Merle Hay Funeral Home/Chapel Hill Cemetery; 4400 Merle Hay Road Des Moines, IA 50310.
